Alexander Brest was born on February 24, 1773 in Strasbourg, France. He was the youngest son of Claude Brest and Françoise-Hortense Meunier. His parents were both French merchants with a strong background in trade. In 1785, Brest traveled to France and joined his brother, Claude-Alexandre Brest, to start a business in silk trading. He was only 21 when he set up his own business, Brest & Gobert, at 48 Rue Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Conseil in Lyon. Brest was very successful in the silk trade and amassed a great fortune. Through his involvement in trade, he gained an extensive knowledge of the Chinese silk industry. By the time he was 40, he had built a successful business empire with a fleet of more than 25 vessels. Brest was an able businessman, but he was also interested in philanthropy and public affairs. In addition to his business ventures, he was interested in cultural exchange and was a supporter of museums. The administration of Lyon had been transferred from Lyon to Paris at the time when Brest was in his thirties, and he was keen to develop a new silk trade route between Lyon and Paris. To this end, he undertook a study tour of China and Japan in the company of a group of silk merchants. During his trip, he became interested in the Chinese art of porcelain and the technique of enameling. He returned to France with a Chinese porcelain collection and acquired a porcelain factory at Clarens in Switzerland. He established his porcelain business under the name of Petit & Grand: Alexandre Brest. Brest’s China porcelain became renowned in Europe. This article.
