What to Do If Your Dentures Don’t Fit Properly

When you were first fitted with dentures in Jacksonville, you were over the moon. You could finally eat, speak, and smile without your missing teeth creating a burden. After a few years, though, you’ve noticed some subtle discomfort when placing your dentures in. They don’t seem to fit quite like they used to. This is completely normal, and one reason why you should get your dentures replaced every few years. Let’s talk about what your dentist can do about it.

First, See Your Dentist

When you find that your dentures aren’t as comfortable as they once were, your best option is to visit your dentist to find out exactly what’s going on. They are, after all, the expert on your dental situation. Call them and let their staff know that your dentures don’t fit as they should. You should able to get an appointment pretty soon afterwards.

Possible Solutions

Once your dentist has examined your dentures and your mouth, they can determine which of the following options is better for you:

New Dentures

Dentures typically require a refitting, also called a relining, every five to ten years. When you experience major tooth loss, the underlying gum tissue and jawbone mass begin to atrophy. This results in a change in the way your dental prosthesis fits. Luckily, the majority of dental insurance plans cover the cost of a new denture about every five years. Your dentist can just take another impression of your gums and any remaining teeth you have and design you a brand-new denture that fits you perfectly.

Implant-Retained Dentures

If you’re looking for dentures that won’t slip around or develop an uncomfortable fit over the years, then you might be a good candidate for implant-retained dentures. These prosthetic teeth are secured in place by four to six dental implants, or titanium posts that are surgically placed in the jawbone. Even patients who have undergone boss loss as a result of missing teeth can receive implant-retained dentures. With this prosthesis, you won’t have to worry about your false teeth slipping around when you chew or speak.

When your dentures start to fit incorrectly, let your dentist know right away. From there, they can determine the best way to solve your problem.
